Communication in 5th Grade
Every Monday students will be coming home with their Red Communication Folders. This is how you will receive almost ALL of your contact from school. Your child will have at least 3 teachers in 5th grade, and the folder method is the best way to get all the information from every one of them. I recommend every Monday you and your child take a little time to look through all of their papers. Tests, grades, worksheets, notes, and other forms of communication will all be placed into the red folder on a weekly basis.
Along with the red folder is the newsletter. Each week we type up a newsletter for parents informing them of upcoming events, what we will be doing the following week, and a general schedule. Personally, I try to get the newsletter to you in several different fashions. First, I print it out and put it in the red folder. Second, if you choose to, I send it in email format every Monday. Lastly, I put it on my website via a blog. If you choose to it has RSS feed if you're familiar with that feature.

Absent/Sick Work
Everyday that we have a missing student I place their papers and assignments on a clipboard on the whiteboard with their name on it. It is the CHILD'S responsibility to get their work, complete it on their time, and then turn it into me ASAP (usually before weeks end). If the work is not completed for the week, on Friday the student will stay in to complete the missing work. It's fine if the absent work is taken home (as long as it's not a test) so feel free to call in and have us gather it for you and we will have it waiting in the front office for you and your child. If when it comes time for me to input the grades in, and your child has not turned in the work, and they have received it, it will count against them. It is their responsibility when they're absent to get caught up. It is vital if your child is going to be gone for 2 or more days to stop by and pick up what they've missed.
